Calgary's Doing it -Charlotte Can Too!

Here is a process very similar to what is being proposed for Charlotte/Mechklenburg

Yet another example in the US of Recycle Waste Facility

Here's another example of this proven technology. Part of the ReVenture Project is the Recycled Fuel Facility. This facility will take in raw Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) and process it through a system similar to the following. The output will be more recycled material and significantly less landfilling.

Rockland NY Recycled Waste Facility

Yet another example in the US of the proven technology to separate waste and increase recycling rates.

The Waste has to go somewhere.

Today there is a choice. Landfill or convert municipal solid waste into enhanced recycling and a "refuse derived fuel". Progressive municipalities around the world are deploying technology to reduce the Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Landfilling. Take a look at how its done here.

Converting MSW into Refuse Derived Fuel

One of the intelligent Waste Solutions we can employ is to separate the waste stream into increased recyclables and RDF (Refuse Derived Fuel). The waste has to go somewhere. One choice is to use our nations technology advantage to increase recycling and create a fuel which reduces our requirement on coal. The other is to landfill the waste and contribute to contribute to the Greenhouse Gas problem because Landfills are responsible for significant methane emissions -- and Methane is one of the most damaging GHG sources.

Here's an example of how a progressive American Company is promoting advanced recycling while creating a renewable fuel source and diverting waste from the landfill.

Port Arthur Gasification

I think one of the things that this video points out is how this company is building systems and technology here in the US and exporting it to other countries, creating valuable exports, and creating jobs at home.

How Europe Handles RDF

Did you know that there is progressive technology out there which can process garbage so that 75% to 85% is re-usable? Metals, Glass, Plastics and some Cardboard is recycled from trash that would otherwise rot in a landfill and release harmful emissions. (Even with Landfill gas recapture a large amount of methane seeps into the atmosphere-- and methane is one of the worst Green House gasses).

The best way to reduce our carbon footprint is to reuse materials and reduce the amount we have to mine and manufacturer. Sticking valuable recyclables in a landfill is just dumb policy. Furthermore much of the non-recyclables can be converted into a fuel. This fuel is made up of a high percentage of biogenic content -- think paper products made from wood -- and displaces coal when it is used to make power. Displacing coal generation with natural, biogenic generation is the way to go.

This video shows you how, in the UK, they wrap and seal this fuel for transport. This is a very enlightened approach that should be promoted more in the US.

Recycle, don't landfill!
